Let's Get Reading!
There are several ways you can use your book box in the workplace. You could just use it as a library where staff borrow books from it, noting who took what and when, in a log book.
Or as a book swap box so anyone taking a book must replace it with another one. This is done on an honour system and cuts out any paperwork. You will end up with a wide and interesting variety of books. You can refresh it with a refill pack from time to time if you find the box ends up full of John Grisham paperbacks!
Reading groups can be fun but the sort where you all have to read the same book and then make comments on it can be intimidating and feel too much like hard work. Instead an informal reading circle that meets once a month is a good idea – maybe in the canteen one lunch-time or the pub after work?
Each member of the circle is allowed to choose as many books from the box as they feel they can read in a month. There should be a real variety in the box so there is something to interest a wide variety of tastes – remember you are all reading different books! At the monthly meeting you simply work around the group and have an informal discussion about what you read, why you liked or disliked it, would you recommend it and why. Are you keen to read more by the author? This is a great way of discovering new authors and reading books you may not have risked buying. Some members will read four books a month, others one every four months. It really doesn’t matter – it’s just a fun, sociable way to enjoy reading and books.
For those that do prefer a more formal reading group, we can supply discounted multiple copies of the same book together with reading notes, author interviews and discussion points.
Your opinion counts!
Having read a book you might like to voice your opinion on it – good or bad. We have a forum for this on the site or you may prefer to go to other sites such as:
or post it on Amazon.
Restocking your box
Refills are available with either mixed or specific male and female themes. You can also operate a book swop system or charge a small fee for your monthly book meeting. For example – if you have six members of the group and you charge £5 per meeting you will have £30 to spend each month. You give this money to a member who buys whatever books interest them that month, they write their names in the front and, having explained briefly why they chose them, put them in the box. This means that each member gets to buy the month’s books twice a year. You’ll end up with a great variety of books and at the end of the year each member reclaims the books they brought and you start again! You’ll end up with books on your bookshelf at home that you wanted and will have also read a real variety of other books throughout the year.
